How air pollution affects the body

Air pollution is now the world's largest single environmental health risk. The effects depend on the pollutant, concentration, and duration of exposure.

Common outdoor pollutants

Sensors in the network primarily report particulate matter. Other pollutants matter too — especially near roads and industrial areas.

PM2.5

Fine particulate matter

Microscopic particles 2.5 µm or smaller. They travel deep into the lungs and bloodstream and are the main basis for AQI on Delectis.

Health: Linked to respiratory illness, heart disease, and premature mortality with long-term exposure. Short spikes can trigger asthma symptoms.

PM10

Coarse particulate matter

Larger particles up to 10 µm. Often visible as dust; irritates eyes, nose, and throat.

Health: Less penetrating than PM2.5 but still harmful at high levels, especially for children and outdoor workers.

NO₂

Nitrogen dioxide

A gas from high-temperature combustion, common near busy roads.

Health: Can inflame airways and worsen asthma. Often elevated where traffic is dense.

O₃

Ground-level ozone

Formed when sunlight reacts with pollution. Typically peaks on sunny afternoons.

Health: Irritates lungs and reduces lung function during exercise. Not emitted directly from a single stack or tailpipe.

CO

Carbon monoxide

Odourless gas from incomplete combustion.

  • · Poorly vented stoves and heaters

Health: Reduces oxygen delivery in the body at high concentrations. Critical indoors; outdoor levels are usually lower but can rise in traffic corridors.

Indoors

Where pollution builds up indoors

Outdoor readings do not capture what happens inside your home or workplace.

Kitchen

Main culprits: Gas combustion (NO₂, CO), cooking ultrafine particles, and frying smoke.

  • →Use a hood that exhausts outdoors when cooking; run it before and after cooking.
  • →Prefer electric or well-vented cooking where possible.
  • →Avoid smoking or burning indoors.

Living areas

Main culprits: Dust, pet dander, tracked-in particles, VOCs from furniture and cleaners.

  • →Vacuum regularly and damp-dust surfaces.
  • →Keep humidity around 30–50% to limit mold and mites.
  • →Choose fragrance-free, low-VOC products when you can.

Bedrooms

Main culprits: Dust mites, pet dander, VOCs from mattresses and furnishings.

  • →Wash bedding weekly in hot water.
  • →Keep pets out of sleeping areas if allergies are a concern.
  • →Ventilate when outdoor air quality allows.

Bathrooms

Main culprits: Moisture, mold spores, VOCs from cleaners and personal care products.

  • →Run exhaust fans during and 20–30 minutes after showers.
  • →Fix leaks promptly and dry damp surfaces.

Playbook

Three steps to better air

Whether indoors or out, improvements follow the same order: tackle sources first, ventilate when outdoor air allows, then filter and monitor what remains.

Step 1

Source control

Reduce pollution at its origin — the most effective step indoors and out.

  • Outdoors: cut unnecessary idling, support cleaner fuels, and reduce open burning of waste and biomass.
  • Indoors: vent cooking fumes outdoors, choose low-VOC cleaners and paints, and fix leaks that encourage mold.
  • Limit smoke indoors from candles, wood fires, and unvented combustion where possible.

Step 2

Ventilation

Use fresh air strategically to dilute what you cannot eliminate.

  • When outdoor AQI is Good or Moderate, open windows to exchange stale indoor air.
  • When outdoor AQI is high — Harmattan dust, smoke, or heavy traffic — keep windows closed.
  • Use exhaust fans in kitchens and bathrooms to remove moisture and combustion by-products.

Step 3

Air cleaning & monitoring

Filter remaining particles and verify that your actions are working.

  • HEPA filtration can lower indoor PM when outdoor air is poor or sources exist indoors.
  • Check your town or nearest sensor on the map before ventilating or planning outdoor activity.
  • Track trends over days and seasons — Harmattan and dry-season dust often raise regional averages.

Network

How monitoring sensors work

Air quality sensors measure concentrations of pollutants in the air — most commonly PM2.5 and PM10 in the Delectis network. Light-scattering optical sensors estimate particle mass; reference instruments use more complex methods and are used to calibrate field units.

Each station reports readings at regular intervals. Data is timestamped, linked to a location, and published on the map and town pages when it passes quality checks.

Sensors are installed on rooftops, schools, hospitals, and other sites chosen to represent public exposure in a town or neighbourhood. Status indicators show whether a station is actively reporting.

Understanding the AQI scale

The hub uses the US EPA Air Quality Index. Each band maps a PM2.5 range to a color and health message.
